Freddie Mercury and Muslum Gurses

The Bohemian Rhapsody film, which tells the musical journey of the Queen community and the life story of their legendary soloist Freddie Mercury, has grossed 540 million dollars worldwide in a month. In Turkey, the film was watched by 435 thousand people in a month and the box-office return obtained was 7.5 million liras.  Again, a film called "Müslüm" which tells a native singer's life was also watched by 5.5 million people in 5 weeks in Turkey and the return obtained was 71 million liras.

During the years when Queen produced symphonic rock, Pink Floyd has also influenced young people around the world with his psychological rock. (With respect to Orhan Kahyaoğlu) In the same period first Orhan Gencebay then Muslum Gurses have made their best songs in Turkey. In 1975, when Queen produced Bohemian Rhapsody,  Muslum Gurses also released his first album.

It is not a coincidence that these singers and bands emerged in the same period. Music is a reflection of the economic and social conditions of its own time. The mode of production not only affects the relations of production but also affects the music made. Classical music masters such as Mozart, Beethoven or Tchaikovsky produced their famous works through the relations of production of their own periods.

By the mid-1970s, youth in the world had been living in the desperate atmosphere brought by the failure of 1968. Meanwhile youth in Turkey, had been living in the crisis of the 1970s.

It was not only the youth who was depressed. At the same time, capitalism had also been in crisis. Passing from Fordism to Post-Fordism, from liberalism to neoliberalism capitalism by imposing its crisis to the working classes had been experiencing a crisis. The crisis of the production process had also affected the relations of production. While Freddie Mercury was composing Bohemian Rhapsody, Muslum Gurses made his best songs in Turkey.

From 1979 onwards, neoliberalism would establish dominance in the world. Monetarism would begin to shape the world capitalism as if it was to imitate Pink Floyd's Money song. Starting from the years of Thatcher's power in UK, Reagan's power in USA and Ozal's power in Turkey musical groups have returned to arabesque in the world of losers.
